Day 33
Fri July 4, 2008
Destination: Burlington, VT
Couchsurfing: Eric Cram
in the morning, got packed up and spent the morning driving around the park
gorgeous northern atlantic coastline
stopped at a small beach; water is beyond freezing. we got our feet wet and couldn’t stand to stand in the water very long
gorgeous rocks, huge; very rocky beaches
drove through the park some more, stopped at a look out point
climbed all over the rocks barefoot, it was fun
finally had to leave
drove all day, straight shot
stopped in St. Johnsbury at the Dog Chapel
basically a dog’s paradise playground way up in some beautiful mountains in vermont
chapel itself was closed for the holidays, but the grounds were open, and there were people with their dogs wandering around
couldn’t stay long, but took some pictures of the gorgeous view
zoom zoom zoom made our way to Burlington, got there just as the sun was setting
Eric works til 11pm, so we decided to meet up with another couchsurfer named Ian
we wandered up and down church street while waiting for a call from him
very lively, like a very long town square
lots of shops and restaurants line the street
crowds of people, street performers, political activists, vendors with carts
my phone died, but found Ian outside a bar not far from church street (i think it was called radio bean)
by now we’re starving, so we say hey let’s go find some cheap food and stuff our face holes
he suggested a few places, but they were all a bit pricey when we looked at the menus, finally took us to a place called American Flatbread
the wait was a bit long, so we waited in the park outside until our call device went off
Ian made us a bit nervous, something wasn’t quite clicking right
kept talking about mooching and trying to live with other people without paying or doing anything
really good pizza, but food was actually really expensive, and Ian didn’t even offer to pay
unfortunate, but our first bad couchsurfing experience
we wandered around a bit; no fireworks cuz Burlington had fireworks yesterday
he offered to take us back to where he was living while we waited for Eric
they happened to be having a party, someone made an american flag cake for fourth of july
Eric called, so we went back to Church street to meet him
found eric sketching on a bench
very cheerful and frank guy
he just lost his job today - worked at Three Tomatoes, a restaurant
the manager over hired a month ago, so now had to fire people
he figures he’ll do caricatures in the street for money/look for another job
we all piled into MUO and drove to his house
lives in house with his brothers and other roommates
currently his brothers are gone, some girls are subletting for the summer
he lives in a loft over the garage
showed us his art portfolio; an aspiring cartoonist, loves Batman
we slept in his basement: very roomy, a bit moldy, but nice
