Atlanta and Home - a scribbles post

July 2nd, 2008  |  Published in Personal Journals, Photojournal Episodes by Danbee

Day 08
Mon June 9, 2008
Destination: Atlanta, GA
Slept at KOA campground in Cartersville, GA (about 1 hour north of Atlanta)

morning: got up early - like, 8:30am
went to Payden and Lacie’s house to interview Lacie about her music. She writes all her own songs, sings with local “session musicians”. Got a great interview and a signed demo cd - whee!
also interviewed our host Tanner back at his apartment - politics, foreign policy, domestic policy, thoughts on the upcoming election; lots of good book and movie suggestions.

headed south to Chattanooga. Couldn’t get the GPS started at first because it kept complaining that it was out of storage space even though we deleted files off the dang thing on the laptop. Discovered that, like the camcorder’s SD cards, you need to delete files using the hardware’s built-in storage clearing mechanism for it to work properly.

On the way to Chattanooga we stumbled on a tiny town called Lewisburg - very adorable little southern town. Parked right next to county courthouse and saw some inmates taking a stroll w/accompanying officer. Visited an old Pharmacy (used to be a pharmacy - now they sell baby clothes and carafs as well as drugs) and an Emporium and Fudgery, where Alex got some cheesecake fudge.

Decided to go see Ruby Falls, but when we got there tickets were too expensive. But we were told that there was a lookout area up the mountain that is free, so we went up there and took some pictures of the surrounding area aka Chattanooga.

We wanted beer and some lightbulbs, so we drove around looking for a Walgreens - found one deep in the heart of the Chattanooga Projects - only got lightbulbs, this wasn’t Kentucky so they weren’t selling liquor at the pharmacy. Alex went to a liquor store where the dude asked for an ID, then when Alex pulled it out the guy behind the counter just laughed and didn’t look at it.

evening accomodations: KOA campground in Cartersville, GA
had stew and rice for dinner
sky started flashing lightening, so we put everything away and set up the tent in a hurry
about 30-40 minutes after going to bed, giant storm let loose
lots of thunder and lightening - it was really bright and loud; lucky we had a good tent
woke up dry and unharmed, but the tent suffered a little - a section of tent pole cracked under stress of storm

Day 09
Tues June 10, 2008
Destination: Starkville, MS

morning: woke up, packed up, had breakfast at Waffle House
then drove to Atlanta
took a while to find parking
then walked around a bit
everything cost too much: Coca-Cola, Aquarium. didn’t even try Children’s Museum cuz the line was gimongously long
went to Olympic Park, I played in water jets while Alex and David sat in the sun (too cool to play in the water with all the little kids + me)
walked around downtown, got some cool pictures
tried to go inside capitol building, but they had x-rays and searches required so we said no
ate lunch at The Varsity - huge diner/burger joint

drove home - yay!
korean food for dinner: yook-eh-jang (spicy beef and green onion soup), white rice, meat dumplings, fried chicken, kimchee, jap-chae (noodles and vegetables), shee-guhm-chee (seasoned spinach), kong-ja-bahn (black beans marinated in soy sauce)

Day 10
Wed June 11, 2008
Stayed in Starkville, MS

spent most of day working on stuff; Morgan came over, we put in some movies; took some naps
breakfast: french toast
lunch: dhuk-gook (rice cake soup)
dinner: pooacha (turkish: bread stuffed with feta cheese and herbs), chicken salad, wild rice, spicy tofu, jap-chae, er can’t remember the other foods
